Starting at Port Lyttleton, on the Christchurch City tour, you will discover the delights of Christchurch City. Christchurch is a port where early settlers started their lives in New Zealand and still today it retains that English Heritage.
Dunedin City Tour
Today you will enjoy a fully guided tour of Christchurch City together with the very best of the cities attractions. The Christchurch Tram, Punting on the Avon River and the Christchurch Gondola. Your day will start with a city highlights tour of the central city of Christchurch which was completely devastated by the Christchurch earthquakes in February 2011. Your guide will explain both the history of the city and the effects of the earthquake, you will see for yourself both the destructive powers of nature, the surviving landmarks, and the rebuild which is taking place.
Whilst in the central city you will enjoy a tram ride on a historic tram which travels through the inner city centre and provides commentary on the buildings and landscape as you pass. Returning to where you boarded the tram, your guide will then continue your sightseeing tour. Your next stop is at the Antigua Boat Sheds located on the banks of the Avon River. Here you will be taken down the river on a historic English Punt as you travel along the borders of the Christchurch Botanical Gardens. The punt will return you to the boat sheds where your guide will collect you.
On leaving the central city, the tour then travels via the Port Hills and Lyttelton Harbour by way of the residential hillside suburb of Cashmere and the vantage points overlooking the City of Christchurch, Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps from both the Sign of the Takahe and Sign of the Kiwi. Travelling over the hills and into Lyttelton Harbour, you’ll reach Governors Bay and then travel around the inner bays of Lyttelton Harbour to the port town of Lyttelton.
From Lyttelton you will travel over the newly opened Evans Pass which was closed for more than 7 years following the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 due to cliff face collapse. Evans Pass will provide you with fantastic views of the harbours heads and the southern bays of the Banks Peninsula. Continuing on you will arrive at the seaside suburb of Sumner and Cave Rock, where you will have some time to explore the beach and/or the shops in this quaint village. The tour will then travel to the Christchurch Gondola where you will enjoy a gondola ride up the port hills and for magnificent views over Christchurch City and Northern Coastline as well as Lyttelton Harbour and the port of Lyttelton. From the Gondola you can be returned to your cruise ship or dropped in the central city.
